Position:  Marketing and Communications Specialist

Program:  All RCDC Programs

Purpose Statement:  The job of Marketing and Communications Specialist was established for the purposes of assisting the Executive Director, Board of Directors and Program Directors in spearheading marketing, branding and  communications efforts as RCDC continues to grow.  The position is responsible for a wide variety of activities to support the agency and its individual programs for the purposes of increasing public awareness and engagement; facilitating donor relationships; recruiting and retaining staff; advocating for and communicating about early childhood issues; and delivering positive results in conformance with agency guidelines. 


Essential Functions: 

  • Collaboratively develops and executes comprehensive, short and long range plans within budget for public awareness, program marketing, donor relations, early childhood advocacy, and employee recruitment and retention for the purpose of assisting in the achievement of agency goals and objectives.

  • Conceptualizes, prepares, manages and disseminates a wide variety of often complex, custom public agency  information in a compelling, cohesive, effective, accurate and timely manner across a variety of formats (e.g. social media, website, radio, TV, print and other local and regional media, etc.) for the purposes of providing quality content for a general media and digital presence and generating interaction (e.g. advertising, announcements, newsletters, articles, posters, and brochures, etc.), responding to inquiries or other requested actions, documenting activities and issues, developing relationships, achieving outcomes and meeting compliance, legal, financial and agency requirements.

  • Promotes the agency and supports the implementation of existing and new programs/services through a combination of collaboration, delegation, speaking opportunities and other personal involvement for the purpose of ensuring high quality, effective communications are provided within established time frames and in conformance with all related requirements. 

  • Works closely with agency leadership to anticipate issues and situations requiring proactive responses or advocacy messages (e.g. policy, financial, research, social situations, program/service challenges, etc.) for the purposes of providing accurate information, engaging with the public , and implementing necessary actions for the benefit of the children/clients served by the agency and the agency’s reputation and well-being overall.

  • Assists in the preparation and drafting of various communications (annual reports, email, social media, ads, etc.) 

  • Supports the development and execution of the agency’s fund development activities including the development and maintenance of positive, ongoing relationships with existing and potential community partners and donors.

  • Explores, creates, systematically executes and monitors best-practice nonprofit marketing strategies necessary for securing optimal public awareness.

  • Travels regularly throughout service area to ensure agency visibility and accountability, build relationships and cultivate partnerships.

  • Confidently develops and makes presentations to individuals, small groups and large groups.

  • Actively participates in the planning, organization and coordination of special events. 

  • Facilitates and/or participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. workshops, committees, seminars, conferences, planning, etc.) that frequently involve a range of issues for the purpose of identifying appropriate actions, receiving and/or conveying information, supporting other staff, and serving as an agency representative.

  • Actively engages in employee recruitment and engagement activities including developing and placing effective vacancy advertisement approaches; representing the agency at career, community and health fairs; ensuring meaningful staff appreciation activities take place; etc.

  • Independently manages daily assignments and activities for the purpose of ensuring that performance outcomes are achieved within budget, timeline, department, and agency objectives. 

  • Provides orientation and support to other agency personnel and program partners regarding resources, procedures, and program requirements for the purpose of ensuring efficient processes are in place and are in compliance with agency policy and established regulatory guidelines.

  • Adheres to all professional guidelines as outlined in agency policies.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the agency.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical and adaptive tasks with a need to regularly upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  excellent interpersonal and workplace relationship skills; excellent writing, editing and speaking skills; excellent organizational, planning and project management skills;  strong office technology,  graphic arts and office equipment usage skills; and effective record-keeping skills.


KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages and/or ratios; read and write technical information; compose a variety of documents and materials; and speak persuasively to implement desire actions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions; and solve practical problems.  Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: Expert knowledge in the latest in digital and social media technology and channels and how to best leverage for marketing programs as part of an overall social business strategy; the ability to successfully self-manage time necessary for carrying out multi-faceted responsibilities; best practices in public relations; current practices in leveraging social and traditional use of media; agency program operations and philosophy; regional community resources; concepts of grammar and punctuation; and business etiquette. 


ABILITY is required of this highly energetic professional to schedule and complete projects; schedule and attend activities and/or meetings; make presentations; and gather, collate, classify and analyze data utilizing defined but differing processes.  Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances and to accommodate differing viewpoints and approaches. Responsibilities include:  completing high quality projects and tasks on time; developing and maintaining trust among coworkers, partners and donors; travel throughout the service area and sometimes outside it; working under supervision with broad organizational guidelines to achieve objectives following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding and/or coordinating with others; and monitoring budget expenditures.  Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions.  There is a continual opportunity to impact the agency’s services. 


Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:  some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.  Generally the job requires 45% sitting, 25% walking, and 30% standing.  The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.


Experience         Job related experience within specialized field is required.


Education           Minimum Bachelor’s degree in job related area.
